Smith International, Inc., along with its subsidiaries, manufactures products and provides services for drilling, completion, and production phases of oil and natural gas exploration and development activities. The company operates in two segments: Smith Oilfield and Distribution. The Smith Oilfield segment offers products and services used in oil and natural gas development activities. It designs, manufactures, and markets drill bits and borehole enlargement tools; supplies drilling tools and services that include directional drilling systems, measurement-while-drilling and logging-while-drilling services, tubulars, completion services, and downhole solutions; and provides completion and production related operations, which include coiled tubing and cased-hole wireline services, packers, and liner hangers. It supplies drilling fluid systems and oilfield production chemicals; offers waste management equipment and services; and provides completion fluids and related tools. The Distribution Segment markets pipes, valves, fittings, mills, safety, and other maintenance products. It also provides warehouse management, vendor integration, and surplus and inventory management services, as well as distributes maintenance, repair, operating supplies and equipment, and line pipe and automated valve products, including valve, actuator, and control packages. It provides products and services to the energy, refining, petrochemical, power generation, and mining industries. Smith International, Inc. was formerly known as Smith Oil Tool Company. Smith International, Inc. was founded in 1937 and is based in Houston, Texas.
