F&M National Corp. was acquired by BB&T Corporation on 08/09/2001. F&M National is the parent company to 11 community banking subsidiaries. It operates 163 banking offices, two mortgage banking units, three trust offices, and six insurance offices. The company provides a range of financial services, including a variety of deposit accounts, as well as commercial, consumer, and mortgage lending to customers in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. In addition to commercial activities, the company operates insurance and trust companies, which generate noninterest income by sales of insurance, trust, and fiduciary services.
